Pharmaceutical Treatment for Nails Fungus

Nail Fungus and Toenail Fungus were very difficult to treat for a long time.

That is because the fungus reside in/under the nail that is a hard tissue to penetrate and the bad nail has a long growing time to be replaced by a good one.

Several classes of pharmaceutical treatments were used in the past for a nail fungus :

• topical treatments : under cream form, the active product is applied to the skin and is effective essentially for the skin forms of fungus (ring worm, athlete foot, jock itch...)
  Under varnish form (Penlac), a better efficiency is noted for a nail fungus, with generally no or very few side effect.
   
• oral treatment : the most effective and reliable treatment for a nail fungus, but not always usable because of other health conditions of the person (liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes).
  For a long time, Griseofulvin was the only known treatment, with a relative efficiency but strong sides effects.
   
  Today, the recent appearance of Terbinafine has significantly improved the treatment and decreases the side effects.

Surgical treatment :

• nail surgery is not anymore a usual recommended treatment for nail fungus because it is painful, disfiguring and a not so reliable treatment for nail fungus. The fungus isn't killed, and can reinfect the new growing nail. This treatment is applicable when other treatments can't be used, in regard with others health conditions of the person.
